The beginning of an international student’s journey in Australia is a mixed bag - there is happiness, excitement and a bit of nervousness as well. While Australia is generally a safe and welcoming country to international students, students under 18 are required to have a guardian. 

The Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) allows guardians of international students to accompany them to Australia. 

Visa Eligibility: 

To qualify for the subclass 500 student visa, you must fulfil the following criteria: 

  • You must either be the student’s parent, guardian or relative. 
  • You must be above 21 years of age.
  • You must have adequate financial resources to support yourself and the student throughout your stay in Australia.
  • You must be able to provide proper accommodation, and support and ensure the general welfare of the student. 
  • You must fulfil the GTE requirements. 
  • You must the Australian government’s health and character requirements. 

Visa Documentation Checklist: 

Before beginning your application process, ensure that you have the following documents prepared: 

  • Identity documents such as a valid passport, driver's licence, national identity card (if applicable, etc)
  • Student Guardian Application Form
  • Form 157N - this must be filled by the student applicant and submitted by you (the guardian) 
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for travel, accommodation, welfare, etc
  • Evidence of adequate health insurance for your stay in Australia 
  • GTE documents 
  • Proof of good character 

FAQs

Question: Can I bring other family members with me to Australia under this visa? 
Answer: You may only bring children under the age of six if there are compelling reasons. Children above the age of six will have to apply for a separate student visa. 

Question: How long is my Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) valid?
Answer: Your visa will be valid until your dependent (the student) turns 18. This visa, otherwise, allows you to live in Australia for up to 5 years. 

Question: Can I work in Australia with a Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590)?
Answer: While you cannot work in Australia under this visa, you may study English for up to 20 hours per week if it is not your first language. 

Question: What is the processing time for this visa?
Answer: The processing time for a Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) may span from 4 to 7 months, depending on various factors.

Question: Can I travel to and from Australia if I hold this visa? 
Answer: You may travel to and from Australia as many times as you like as long as the visa is valid. However, if you are travelling without your dependent (the student), you must make appropriate arrangements for them. 

Question: Can I apply for permanent residency with this visa? 
Answer: No, you cannot. After your Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) expires, you must leave Australia.
